The Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936. Interest was sparked after Francisco Franco became enraged at the new democratically elected government that had replaced the monarchy before it. The sides of the war were generally Republicans and Nationalists, but the line between them was not clear. The Republicans mainly comprised of workers, peasants, trade unions, the Spanish government, Socialists and Communists; whereas the Nationalists were mainly comprised of rebellious military members, industry, landowners, middle class and the Catholic Church. The Republicans gained support from the Soviet Union and Europe, and the Nationalists gained support from fascist governments such as Italy and Nazi Germany. The Nationalists gained better weapons and was more organized at the aid of Germany, who had just fought in World War I years before. The Republicans were more divided and didn’t receive as much support from the Soviet Union as the Nationalists received from Germany. In the end, Francisco Franco and the Nationalists won the civil war, which started a forty year dictatorship and international isolation for Spain.
Federico Garcia Lorca was born in 1898 in Spain. He was a member of the controversial group Generation of ‘27. He lived in Andalucia, Spain during the Spanish Civil War, and was not loyal to the new Nationalist regime. He is believed to be executed in 1936 after disclosing his sexuality.
Life in Andalucia during the civil war was very tense, considering control was basically divided between the Nationalists and Republicans. Andalucia is Spain's most populous province, so control of it was wanted. The Nationalists and Francisco Franco eventually gained control of all of Spain, including Andalucia, and won the civil war.
